CMS : Open Source vs. Proprietary

December 23rd 2009
Ryan L.

Hello Friends, from Net Acceleration's offices in San Francisco!

As we all know with November and December comes holidays, end of year budget reforms, friends, family, nog and our in-house favorite; pizza and beer day.

So pizza and beer day may not be the most festive activity but it is a valuable tool tomaintain morale (sanity) and otherwise keep staff all on the same page to work together as a cohesive unit.

Another way that events help our staff is informing each other of some cool stuff to come both within the walls of Net Acceleration but also within the industry. One current topic of debate around here is between Open Source vs. Proprietary Content Management Systems (CMS).

I know that CMS has been a topic of this newsletter before, so I won’t necessarily note whatNet Accelerationcan do with AccelSite CMS (because there are too many functions available and I would probably fall over from fatigue or writers cramp if I were to try to list them all) but more importantly I will show you why It couldbe the answer to your or your clients needs.

With that being said, I would like to jump right into our first segment and feel free to share...

Industry and Business News

Open source vs. Proprietary CMS software. What are your choices and why should you chose one over the other? This has beenthe debate for web designers, web developers, individuals, small business owners and firms around the globefor as long as CMS has been around. But first a brief synopsis of just what a CMS is.

My favorite, to the point definition is, "Software used to enter, edit, import, export, schedule and publish websites and other files and information." Source

With your CMS you have control over designated areas of your web application or website and perhaps more importantly if it is a hosted solution, the changes are madein real time. This means once you've made changes to the user interface and hit save, it automatically updates your website instantaneously! Both Individuals and organizations can benefit from a CMS and are really boundless to the possibilities that a CMS can provide. With a CMS you can update your address, write in a blog, add pictures, delete pages, add products to your eCommerce website, and add documents to your site for others to download and so on.

Now that you have determined that you can benefit from a CMS the next question is what program do you use? The answer is not always as clear as it may seem as there are now on both sides. Similar to the Team Aniston vs. Team Jolie or the Team Robert vs. Team Jacob (I know, pop culture; who knew!) there is Team open source vs. Team proprietary. If you couldn't tell by now, Net Acceleration promotes Team Proprietary for a handful of reasons all revolving around the fact that we have hand coded a complete CMS to be used across industries and business structures,AccelSite CMS.

Reasons why you should highly consider using a Proprietary CMS like AccelSite CMS are fairly straight forward.

Open source software may seem like they have a lower barrier of entry, butthe total cost of ownership over its lifetime is often much higher than Proprietary software

Open source softwareis widely used but is also widely modified, and when your developer gets a copy of the software it may ormay not reflect your specific needs. Proprietary Software tends to be less specific with the option of modifying

Decent open source developers are a dime-a-dozen and great open source developers are hard to find but when it is time to modify an existing open source project not only is theoriginal developer nowhere to be found, but others can’t work on it because they can’t understand how the original developer made it work the first time! Our phones ringall the time with this same story...

With Proprietary software such as Net Acceleration's AccelSite CMS the same people that built the software are the same people that support the software, who are also the same people that can build off of your existing website, who are the same people that have been in business for over 10 years and are NOT going anywhere

Obviously these are only a handful of points in an argument of why proprietary software, and more importantly why Net Acceleration's AccelSite CMS might be better for your situation than open source, but don't take my word for it; take our satisfied client's word for it.

Net Acceleration's Accelsite CMS software is the easy part of my proposals. My clients love the program and the experience they have is effortless in managing the content.

I've used a lot of different CMS tools in the past - Joomla, Expression Engine, and Drupal but Net Acceleration's AccelSite CMS is by far the easiest to use. It is intuitive and my clients love it. The guys at Net Acceleration also provide stellar training and great customer service. There's no going back, AccelSite CMS is a no-brainer.
